Minneriya National Park

Minneriya National Park is a renowned wildlife sanctuary located in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province. Spanning approximately 8,889 hectares, the park is famous for its spectacular elephant gatherings, known as “The Gathering.” This annual event occurs during the dry season, from June to September, when hundreds of elephants congregate near the Minneriya Tank.

The park’s diverse ecosystems encompass lush grasslands, scrublands, and wetlands. The centerpiece is the ancient Minneriya Tank, built in the 3rd century AD, which serves as a vital water source for wildlife.

While elephants take the spotlight, Minneriya National Park is also home to a variety of other wildlife species. Visitors have the chance to spot sambar deer, sloth bears, leopards, crocodiles, and an impressive array of bird species. Birdwatchers can enjoy sightings of great white pelicans, painted storks, and colourful Sri Lanka junglefowl.

Exploring the park through jeep safaris led by experienced guides is a popular way to discover its treasures. These safaris offer close encounters with wildlife and opportunities for photography, all while learning about the park’s ecology and conservation efforts.

Minneriya National Park provides an unforgettable experience, immersing visitors in the natural wonders of Sri Lanka’s wildlife and landscapes.
